The Mysterious Mechanics of Tone - Alexa Still
Interactive Workshop
This workshop will focus on sound (embouchure), posture and air. Alexa Still will answer questions from the audience about sound or control issues.
Paganini Caprices
24 Caprices, Opus 1 for Flute Solo
The entire book of 24 Caprices will be performed by various artists during the Festival, so bring your book of Paganini Caprices with you. This is a rare opportunity to hear some of the Caprices performed outside of the practice room!
Visiting the Tradestands
AFF is an ideal opportunity to try out and gather information about a range of different flutes. A number of flute companies will make their products, their services and themselves available to you.
Exhibitors Showcase
This is an opportunity to get to know the representatives associated with the companies whose products (flutes) are such an important part of our lives. It is also an opportunity to hear about their history, latest innovations and to ask questions.
Blocki Flute Method
Learn how the awarding-winning Blocki Flute Method and the new KinderFluteTM program have helped teachers to consistently see students thrive not only as excellent flutists, but as musicians.
AND
Bring your flutes to a second hands-on showcase on Monday, to discover how visually seeing the air column’s speed and direction can transform how we teach tone, intonation, flexibility, phrasing, and even double tonguing.
Burkart Flutes and Piccolos
Each Lillian Burkart flute and piccolo is custom made to the player's specification.
Every Burkart flute, piccolo and headjoint embodies the motto:
"The Sound and Feel of Great Design"
History of William S. Haynes Company, 1888-present.
Alan Weiss, Artist-in-Residence of the William S. Haynes Company, will present a 30 minute lecture on the history and development of the flute in America. This talk will also include photographs and a short question and answer session.
Altus and Azumi Flutes
David Leviston, with the assistance of some leading Altus performers, will give a presentation on the history, philosophy and model range of this leading brand of Japanese flutes.
Working with Accompanists
Making the Most out of your Rehearsal
In this workshop, flutist/pianist Jocelyn Fazzone discusses the issues and problems we all face as we go through the rehearsal process.
Through working at the piano in this session, accompanying the participants, Jocelyn will demonstrate how to use a rehearsal to assist your interpretation, style, intonation and ensemble skills to maximise your performance as a whole.
Down Under with Low Flutes - Peter Sheridan
Down Under with Low Flutes explores new music for large flutes. A chance to hear (and see) some of the most spectacular big flutes in the world, including the lowest flute ever made, the hyperbass flute! Solo, chamber and electronic music by Dunleavy, Ross, Rosiak, Downes, Albert and Giles. Featuring selections from Peter Sheridan’s CD, “Monologues-Dialogues.” (MOVE records)
Peter Sheridan will demonstrate (come and try for yourself) the beauty, frustrations and artistry of playing these 'gentle giants'.
From 5 Notes to Flying Fingers - Kathryn Blocki
While using 5-note patterns as a foundation, explore how beginner instrumentalists can quickly advance from 'just playing the notes' to becoming a true musician. Five-note patterns will be used as the foundation for building musical concepts of technique, beat levels, rhythm, legato tonguing, phrasing, stylistic articulation and ear training.
Tone Tonics - Does you tone need a tonic? - Margaret Crawford
Does your Tone need a Tonic? Does it need a workout? Some vitamins perhaps? You don’t have to practice the same old tone warm-ups all the time. Remember, boredom dulls the brain as surely as alcohol. There are so many tone exercises from which to choose, and variety will help to keep you interested and on the ball. You can even invent your own! That’s how all the tone exercises in the history of flute playing came into being – somebody invented them; usually with a specific purpose in mind. It is fascinating to explore the background of many tone warm-ups. They all have a history. On this occasion participants should come armed with a couple of (preferably empty!) glass bottles (not plastic) of any shape or size.
Transcribing for Flute Ensemble - Tucana Flute Quartet
Since 1992, Tucana has been performing, arranging and commissioning works for flute quartet. Tucana will share their insights into what works for a flute ensemble and what doesn't.
Topics covered will include:
- how to choose repertoire that will work; from baroque through to popular and avant garde styles
- how to deal with limitations of flute range when transcribing from other instruments
- strategies to enhance clarity and attack in the lower parts
- tips on clear notation, to expedite rehearsal time
- Q & A
Make every performance Magical - Vernon Hill
Vernon will show you how to really improve with every practice session, and simple ways to make every performance quite distinctive and magical – easy but extremely effective ways to get your technique fast, smooth and clean – how to use a deliciously warm sound with sensitively convincing phrasing.
Beatboxing Workshop - Shaun Barlow
Bring your flute along and learn how you can start to play in the style of YouTube icons Greg Patillo and Nathan 'Flutebox' Lee. Shaun Barlow will lead you step-by-step through the core sounds used in flute-beatboxing. Handouts demonstrating the notation of beatbox-flute will be provided.
Silver Swarms
SILVER SWARMS are flute ‘flash mobs’ – popping up in unlikely places to stun an unsuspecting public with amazing sounds.
SILVER SWARMS will perform specially-composed works that involve simple instructions for sound and movement, building up into complex and beautiful webs of ambient sound. There are no scores, no music stands and there will be no conductor. Players will emerge from amongst the crowds, weaving their musical threads in the most unlikely places.
During the Australian Flute Festival, SILVER SWARMS will perform in two of Canberra’s busiest locations – the Jolimont Bus Terminal and the Canberra Centre shopping centre.
We’ll need 10+ players per SWARM, the more the merrier! (any level of playing, beginners to professional)
All AFF attendees are invited to be part of SILVER SWARMS 2011, performing in the Canberra CBD Saturday and Sunday.
Applying for Grants - Morwenna Collett
How to find the right grant to fit you and your project.
Morwenna Collett will talk about the different funding options available and provide tips on planning and writing applications. There will be a question/answer time at the end.
Panel Discussion - Auditions
Auditions! The mention of the word is enough to strike fear and trembling in many players. Like any job interview, there are things you can do to help you refine the process. Knowing the system and how it works is one of those things. Bring your questions to the panel - Lisa-Maree Amos, Geoffrey Collins and Janet Webb, all of whom have been on both sides of the audition screen.
Piccolo Perspectives - Nan Raphael
A lecture demonstration detailing the differences between flute and piccolo, technical aspects of piccolo playing and a demonstration of a variety of solo pieces.
Videoconference Masterclass - Michael Parloff - Manhattan School of Music
This session will be a virtual videoconference between the Manhattan School of Music and the ANU School of Music. Live from New York, Michael Parloff will direct this masterclass.
Deep Pipes - Peter Sheridan
A lecture demonstration on the full range of the low flutes, from alto down to the gigantic hyperbass flute. Presented by low flutes specialist, Peter Sheridan, topics will include breathing, tone development and repertoire. Bring an extra lung for a go on the hyperbass flute……… A must for a low flute enthusiast.
The Refinement of Rhythm - Associate Professor Bengt-Olov Palmqvist
"A new, innovative and exciting approach for learning to perform increasingly challenging rhythms"
Using selected extracts from "The Refinement", participants will be encouraged to perform, by singing and clapping different facets of rhythm, from the simple to more challenging. The methodological and musical aspect linked with performance will be strongly addressed by a "step by step" approach, providing an understanding, competency and mastery of rhythmic performance.
Remember to bring your flute!
Artist Interviews - Rebecca Steel
How do artists develop the extra factor that leads to success?
Rebecca Steel will interview Denis Bouriakov, Aldo Baerten and Molly Barth.
Blocki Flute Method - Kathryn Blocki
The mark of a great teacher is not that some students excel, but rather that all students succeed and flourish.
Learn how the awarding-winning Blocki Flute Method and the new KinderFluteTM program has helped teachers to consistently see students thrive not only as excellent flutists, but as musicians.
